The cactus, background and how to care for it
- by Mark Snijders
Welcome to our plant webshop blog, the place for all things green. Today we dive into the special world of cacti, a favorite among plant lovers for their unique shapes and easy care.
Cacti belong to the Cactaceae family, a group that includes more than 2,000 different species. They originate from the Americas and are adapted to a wide range of climates, from arid deserts to rainforests.
What makes cacti so attractive is their ability to survive in extreme conditions. They are true survivors, able to store water in their stems and leaves to survive in dry, arid environments. This makes them perfect for those of us who sometimes forget to water our plants!
The key to cactus care is to mimic their natural environment. This means lots of sunlight and not too much water. Most cacti prefer a sunny windowsill where they can receive at least four hours of direct sunlight per day.
Watering should be done sparingly. In general, it is better to wait until the soil is completely dry before watering. In winter, when the plant is dormant, watering can be reduced even further.
Cacti are also special because they bloom. Depending on the variety, they can produce beautiful, vibrant flowers, a real treat for the eyes!
Whether you're a novice plant parent or an experienced green thumb, cacti are a great addition to any plant collection. With their unique appearance and easy care, they are the perfect plants to bring a touch of green into your home.
